2011 OwL (Omaha with Lights) Ride Seeking Experience Cyclists to Serve as Ride Right Rangers
The 2011 OwL Ride will soon be here. The first annual ride in 2010 brought out nearly 1,000 riders and registrations this year are ahead of last year’s pace.
The 2011 OwL Ride is scheduled for Saturday, July 16, beginning at 11:00 p.m. For more details about the ride, go to the OwL Ride website at http://owlride.org/event-info/.
Experienced cyclists from area bike clubs and bike groups are being asked to volunteer to serve as Ride Right Rangers (RRRs). For anyone who volunteers to be a RRR, the registration fee of $25 per rider will be waived.
For riders who plan to be RRRs, they do not need to register on the OwL Ride website. A separate sign-up process will used for the RRR’s (more information to be provided later).
As was done last year, all RRRs will be provided an orange reflective vest to identify them as RRRs. RRR volunteers will set examples of safe and responsible riding through their presence on the ride. More information will be provided to all RRR volunteers regarding RRR duties prior to the event.
All RRR volunteers need to available to meet at 10:15 pm 45 minutes prior to the start of the ride. The ride will generally follow the same route as last year, but because of the flooding, the exact starting location is yet to be determined. The “Playing with Fire” concert will be moved to Stinson Park due to the flooding. Because there will not be a downtown event prior to the ride, no bicycle corral is being planned for this year’s ride.

BYOKTMTB?
What exaclty is BYOKTMTB you might ask. It stands for Bring Your Own Kid Mountain Biking Day.
This is a chance to bring the whole family out for a fun, guided ride, followed by some awesome food and drinks. It's the best way to introduce your kids to the most fun they'll have on two wheels!
Manawa has been off limits all year because of flooding but we are finally able to ride the short loop, and we want to celebrate. The short loop is perfect for the kiddos and first time riders. It's flat and fun! After the ride, head across the street for some grub and good times on the Dream Land playground, which was designed by children! It's huge!
We hope to see you and your family. Bring 'em all. The more the merrier. If the trails are too wet to ride, we'll ride the paved trail instead. Keep an eye here and Face Book for details.
We could use volunteers. Please contact Dave Packard at 402-926-9696 or David.A.Packard@usace.army.mil.

Another Volunteer Opportunity!

Here is your chance to put in a couple of hours of volunteer time that will make you feel really good!!
The Saddlebrook Elementary PTA is hosting a bike rodeo on Saturday, August 14 from 6-7:30pm, and we could use some help with some general bike maintenance and helmet fitting duties. If you have some basic bike tools, a work stand, and some handy wrenching skills ... or any combination thereof ... we'd love to have your help.
We won't be overhauling anyone's bikes; rather, minor tweaks to make sure the kids are ready to ride...pump up tires, adjust saddle height, fix a chain.
Saddlebrook's "Hike and Bike" program encourages kids to walk and ride to school. The school is located just west of Standing Bear Lake at 148th & Laurel Ave.

Volunteers Needed

The group organizing the Corporate Cycling Challenge on August 15 is looking for volunteers to help run the water stop at Fort Calhoun.
Details: Set up at 8:30 at the city park in Fort Calhoun. About 8 volunteers are needed to hand out food and water to about 2000 plus cyclists in about two hours time. We are usually done at about 11:15.

Bonus: BOCC riders will earn bonus points if they also ride in the Corporate Cycling Challenge. We will also extend bonus points to any BOCC rider that volunteers at the event!! (Bonus = doubling the total points earned during the final week of the BOCC.)
As you know, proceeds from this event paid for the 50 bike racks that you are in the process of being installed in the downtown and midtown area, and we want to support those who support us! Please contact Julie at jharris (at) activateomaha (dot) org if you are interested in helping.

OWL Ride - Volunteers Needed!
The OwL Ride (Omaha with Lights night bike ride) organizers have asked for experienced cyclists to assist in two areas. The OwL Ride ( http://owlride.org/ ), billed as "Omaha's nighttime urban cycling adventure" and with ambitions to become the largest annual night bike ride between Chicago and Denver, will start the inaugural ride at 11pm on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Lewis and Clark Landing on the Omaha riverfront. The ride will start following the Playing with Fire concert that night. It will travel a 16-mile loop route from the L&C Landing to Midtown Crossing, Dundee, Elmwood Park, through Morton Meadows, Field Club, the Old Market and back to the riverfront. There will be a shortcut at Midtown Crossing to create a seven-mile ride.
The needs:
(1) Bike corral staffing at Lewis and Clark Landing during the Playing with Fire concert preceding the 11pm start of the OwL Ride (one or two volunteers present from 4pm to 8pm to set up the corral with materials provided and check in bikes; three or more volunteers from 9pm to 11pm to check in bikes, and then check out bikes at 10:30-11:00pm). OwL Ride will provide detail procedures and wrist band materials to identify bikes to owners for check-in and check-out. In addition, an off-duty sheriff deputy will provide security specifically for the bike corral during the concert.
(2) "Ride Right Rangers"--These volunteers would agree to wear a safety vest provided by the OwL Ride and ride the route using common cycling courtesy, following normal safe riding practices (right side of road, ride predictably, signal and verbalize slowing and stopping, etc.). The request is that these volunteers attempt to stay with groups of casual riders and simply serve as examples of courteous, safe riding. 12 to 24 Ride Right Rangers would be welcome. The OwL Ride will waive the $25 registration fee for volunteers for this duty who have not previously registered, although the standard rider liability waiver will be required (OwL Ride can't do refunds of existing registrations--which support a worthy cause, the Meyer Foundation for Disabilities, and which are very much appreciated--but would still welcome any registrants who want to join the Ride Right Ranger corps).
A few details for volunteers to know in advance: Omaha police will support the ride during the start of the ride and through the first few, busiest blocks of downtown Omaha. Riders will be required to follow traffic laws, including stopping at red lights and stop signs. Efforts will be made to mark particular hazards such as drainage grates and any extreme potholes. Course marshals will be placed at key intersections. The route is designed to minimize stops and steep hills, given the available topography.
We believe this event has the potential to expand cycling in Omaha, and welcome your contribution to its success! http://owlride.org/
