Out and About!

It's that time of year when the requests start rolling in to Activate Omaha for health fairs and lunch 'n learn presentations. Although we are stretched pretty thin these days, we still try to make it out to a few when schedules allow...especially when they involve some of our most dedicated bike commuter advocates!

Physician's Mutual had us over last week. Sean and Scott had a great display with their bikes, the commuter map, and a sign up sheet for how to get more info about the PM commuter challenge team. Scott even came in on his day off to help with this!

Today, we stopped over to Union Pacific to lend a hand to our good buddy Scott Redd. They had a great lunch 'n learn about bike commuting, including info on how UP employees can work through Human Resources to access the new Commuter Bike Tax Credit! Sarah Johnson was also there from Greenstreet Cycles to talk about bikes and gear. It was great to see one of the executives stand up and talk about how she was committing to bike commuting 3 days a week over the summer, and she wanted others to check in on her and help her be accountable.

Naturally, the bike racks at the front door of UP were full when I peeked out to check. Two guys were coming in from an lunchtime ride, in fact. What an awesome visual that is for downtown.

I flew from one end of town to another after the UP gig, out to a suburban elementary school to talk to a principal and parent champion about how we can get more kids walking and biking to their school. I was delighted to see an adult-sized bike (complete with fenders, a basket and an orange flag!) up against the building ... and even more delighted to learn that this bike belongs to a teacher that commutes regularly.
What a great role model for those students. Great job!
