Hello All - Back from the Safe Routes to School Conference in Portland. This book - "Pedaling Revolution: How Cyclists are Changing American Cities" - was the talk of our table at the Thursday night reception.* I picked up a copy of the book at the airport on my way out of town and could not put it down. I think we need to get several copies circulating. (Will make mine available when I'm done, which will be soon.) The copyright is 2009, but paperback is already available. From the back cover: "Chapters focus on big cities, college towns, and America's most successful bike city, Portland, show how cyclists, with the encouragement of local officials, are claiming a share of the valuable streetscape." The author, Jeff Mapes, is a political reporter from Portland and an avid bike commuter. It is an easy read, and there is so much we can learn from those who have gone before us in this quest. Something for everyone in here.

*Funny story on the Thursday night reception: I was standing in line waiting to redeem my free drink coupon and started chatting with the nice woman in line behind me. When she learned that I was there by myself, she invited me to join her table. It wasn't until the full introductions around the table then I realized that I was sitting with the executive board of APBP (American Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals) (www.apbp.org). They put on the Pro Walk Pro Bike conference every other year. Great folks!!

That looks like an interesting book. I was going to order the Amazon Kindle edition (to read on my iPhone), but it's not published in an electronic format yet.
I might just have to pedal out to the bookstore and see if they've got a copy.
It's a good read so far. I got it at the public library (saddlecreek branch). I'm on chapter 2 so far. I should have it done within 2 weeks if you want to check it out after me.
Did you know that libraries let you check books out for FREE! Who would have guessed. ;-)
