Coat of arms or logoGreat news coming out of the state legislature today!  Sen. Tom Hansen of North Platte introduced a bill that would require vehicles to give 3 feet of space when passing cyclists, pedestrians and operators of assisted electronic mobility devices.

The specific language pertaining to cyclists: "...shall exercise due care, which shall include, but not be limited to, leaving a safe distance of no less than three feet clearance, when applicable, when passing a bicycle..."

I'll be interested to see how they plan to enforce the law. I appreciate the effort but seriously doubt it will have any impact on how motorist treat us.

The first step is passing the law, the second step is driver education which includes teaching tolerance.

Both very good points. The 3 feet law should be the standard in all states, so this is a step in the right direction. With that said this will not be enforced and it will also not be obeyed by the motorist in this town. That is until the city decides to invest some serious money into cycling/pedestrian/greenways infrastructure. Which will then get more people out on bikes and walking more, thus increasing the exposure to pedestrian traffic. Thanks for the information Omaha Bikes.
